Broadcast channel: the Instagram broadcast list and what it solves
By Tiago Costa·Updated on August 5, 2026

Definition
A broadcast channel is a one-way conversation inside Direct.
- Only the admin posts. Subscribers read, react and vote.
- Direct delivery to the inbox, with no feed ranking in between.
- A small, warm audience, made only of people who subscribed.
- Invitations via Stories, profile or link are what grow it.
What it is and why it exists
The broadcast channel lives inside Direct, but it is not a group. Only the admin writes; subscribers can react with emoji and vote in polls, and that is it. There is no cross conversation, which is precisely the point: a group with ten thousand people is unusable, a broadcast with ten thousand is not.
Its reason to exist is escaping ranking. In the feed and in Reels, the algorithm decides who sees. In a channel, whoever subscribed receives, and receives with a notification. You trade size for delivery certainty.
In practice a channel serves to tell, not to be discovered: launches, behind the scenes, links, live notices. It is the closest thing to an email list the platform offers.
How to create one
The path is Direct: on the new message icon there is an option to create a broadcast channel. You name it, define who can join and post the first message.
Once created, it does not grow on its own. The invitation routes are:
- Sharing to Stories, which converts by far the best.
- Pinning the invitation to the profile, for newcomers.
- A direct link, which works off platform.
One warning that saves frustration: whoever joins receives new messages, not the entire history. A channel is a stream, not an archive.

Why yours may not appear
It is the most searched question about the feature, and the causes are concrete:
- Outdated app. Always the first thing to check.
- Account type. The feature was born for creator and business accounts, and availability for personal accounts varies.
- Gradual regional rollout. Instagram features do not reach everyone on the same day.
- An account restriction. Worth checking the account status screen.
On the follower requirement, which shows up a lot in search: the channel does not carry the same kind of gate other features have had. What gates it, when it does, tends to be account type and regional rollout, not a minimum follower count.
How to use it without burning the list
The channel notifies. That is its strength and also the way to destroy it.
- Have a reason per message. If the person gains nothing by opening, they leave.
- Do not mirror the feed. If it is the same thing they already saw, the channel becomes noise.
- Use polls. It is the only reply channel that exists, and it doubles as cheap research.
- Watch exits, not joins. A subscriber who leaves after a specific message is telling you what not to do.
- Save it for what matters. A channel used three times a week with something real beats one used daily with anything.

Checklist
- I invited through Stories, the route that converts best.
- Every message has a reason to exist.
- I am not repeating what already went to the feed.
- I use polls to get replies and to research.
- I track exits after each message.
Frequently asked questions
What is a broadcast channel on Instagram?
It is a one-way conversation inside Direct where only the admin posts and every subscriber receives it, with a notification. Subscribers can react with emoji and vote in polls, but they do not talk to each other.
How do you create a broadcast channel on Instagram?
In Direct, tap the new message icon and choose to create a broadcast channel. Name it, define who can join and post the first message. Then invite people through Stories, your profile or a direct link.
Do you need 1000 followers to make a channel on Instagram?
No. What gates the feature, when it is gated, tends to be account type and gradual regional rollout rather than a minimum follower count. If it does not appear, check for an app update and your account status first.
What is the difference between a broadcast channel and a group chat?
In a group everyone writes and everyone sees. In a channel only the admin writes, and subscribers just react and vote. That is why a channel works with thousands of people while a group that size would be unusable.
Do new subscribers see old messages?
No. Whoever subscribes starts receiving new messages, not the whole history. The channel works as a stream of announcements, not as a searchable archive.

Stories
Stories are the vertical posts that disappear after 24 hours, shown at the top of the app rather than in the feed. It is the platform's relationship format: distribution goes almost entirely to existing followers, and ordering depends on closeness and viewing history. It is also the only Instagram format where the publisher sees a named list of who watched.

Close friends
Close friends is a private list that restricts who a Story is delivered to. People on it see the content marked with a green ring; people who are not simply never see it exists. The list is entirely one sided and invisible: you choose alone, nobody is notified when they are added or removed, and no one else can see who yours are.

Bottom of funnel
Bottom of funnel is content for people who already decided to solve the problem and are choosing whom to solve it with. It deals with proof, pricing, guarantees and offer detail. It is the stage that reaches least and converts most, and understanding that trade is what prevents the wrong conclusion that it does not work simply because it gets fewer views.

Reach
Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a piece of content at least once. Unlike impressions, it does not count the same person twice, so it measures the size of the audience touched rather than the volume of exposure. On Instagram, reach is reported per post and per period, and it can be split between followers and non followers, which is the reading that shows whether a profile is discovering new people or simply circulating among those who already follow it.
