Username: the account's address, and the one profile field that breaks links
By Tiago Costa·Updated on August 5, 2026

Definition
The username is the account's unique identifier, what comes after the at sign.
- Unique on the platform, and part of the profile URL.
- Only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters.
- It is indexed in search, unlike the body of the bio.
- Changing it breaks old links and mentions already made.
What it is and what it governs
The username is the handle: the identifier nobody else on the platform can duplicate. It appears at the top of the profile, in every mention, in every tag, and forms the account's public URL.
Do not confuse it with the display name, the bold text just below. The display name can repeat, accepts spaces and accents, and can be changed with no technical consequence. The username has none of those freedoms.
Practical rules: up to 30 characters, only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. No spaces, no accents, no hyphens, no emoji.
How to choose one
The priority order that saves headaches:
- The brand name, clean. If it is free, the discussion is over.
- Brand plus category. When the clean one is taken, appending the field usually beats stuffing in numbers or underscores.
- Easy to say out loud. This matters more than it seems: if you have to spell it on a podcast or a live, it is wrong.
- Consistent with your other channels. The same handle everywhere reduces friction and typos.
What to avoid: strings of underscores, numbers standing in for letters, and anything that depends on punctuation to make sense. All of that becomes someone else's typo, and a typo sends your audience to a different profile.

It is indexed, and the bio is not
This is the strategy point most people miss. The username and the display name feed Instagram's internal search. The body of the bio, in general, does not in the same way.
In practice: if there is a word you want to be found by inside the platform, its place is the name field, not the bio. Plenty of accounts do the opposite, stuffing the bio with terms and leaving the name field as a personal name.
Worth testing in the platform's own search, because behaviour changes over time and varies by region.
The cost of changing it
Changing the handle takes a few taps and has long consequences:
- The old URL stops working, and every link pointing at it breaks.
- Old mentions stop linking to you.
- The old handle becomes free for someone else to claim, including someone who wants to impersonate you.
- Printed assets and published video start pointing at nothing.
If the change is genuinely necessary, announce it beforehand, keep the old name mentioned in the bio for a while, and update the links you control first.

Checklist
- I can say my handle out loud without spelling it.
- It does not depend on underscores or numbers to make sense.
- It is the same on my other platforms.
- The word I want to be found by is in the name field.
- If I change it, I already know which links I will need to update.
Frequently asked questions
What is an Instagram username?
It is the account's unique identifier, what appears after the at sign and forms the profile URL. It accepts only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, holds up to 30 characters, and no other account on the platform can have the same one.
What is a good IG username?
Start with the brand name alone; if it is taken, append the category rather than adding numbers or underscores. The decisive test is being able to say it out loud without spelling it, because a typo sends your audience to a different profile.
What is the difference between name and username on Instagram?
The username is the handle: unique, no spaces or accents, and part of the URL. The display name is the bold text just below, can repeat across accounts, accepts spaces, accents and emoji, and changing it breaks no links.
Can I change my Instagram username?
Yes, but the old URL stops working, old mentions stop linking to you, and the previous handle becomes free for someone else to claim. If it is necessary, announce it beforehand and update the links you control first.
Does the username show up in Instagram search?
Yes, it is indexed in internal search, along with the display name. The body of the bio, in general, is not indexed in the same way, so the word you want to be found by belongs in the name field.

Display name
The display name is the bold text at the top of the profile, right above the bio. Unlike the username, it can repeat across accounts, accepts spaces, accents and emoji, and changing it breaks no links. What almost nobody uses to their advantage: it is indexed in Instagram's internal search, which makes it the best place on the profile for the word you want to be found by.

Instagram bio
The bio is the block of up to 150 characters at the top of the profile, below the name. It is read at the exact moment someone decides to follow or leave, which makes it the account's most important conversion asset. The most common mistake is spending it on a quote: a visitor needs to understand within seconds what the account does, for whom, and what to do next.

Profile picture
The profile picture is the circular image identifying the account across the platform. It is uploaded square and cropped to a circle, and it appears very small in most of the places where it is actually seen: comments, the Stories bar, search results. That changes the criterion for what works: recognisable at a few pixels beats beautiful at full screen.

Instagram SEO
Instagram SEO is optimising the profile and posts for the platform's internal search, which now works with words instead of depending only on hashtags. The system today reads the name field, the username, the caption, on screen text and transcribed audio. That turned search into a continuous discovery channel, and it is the least contested channel inside the platform.
