Share rate: the best predictor of reach you have

Definition

Share rate is the percentage of people who saw the content and sent it to someone else.

  • Formula: shares divided by reach, times 100.
  • It anticipates growth better than any other interaction metric.
  • It measures social value, not usefulness or approval.
  • Small numbers are normal. Sharing is rare by nature.

How to calculate it and what to expect

Share rate = shares ÷ reach × 100

The first thing to adjust is expectation. Sharing is the most expensive gesture on Instagram, so the rate is naturally far lower than the like or save rate. Single-digit percentages, or fractions of a percentage point, are normal, and that does not indicate failure.

What matters is not the absolute value, it is where it sits relative to your own median. A piece with a rate three times above your profile median deserves attention even if the number looks small on paper.

Why it anticipates growth

Every other interaction happens inside your audience. Sharing is the only one that crosses the border: it delivers the piece to someone who does not follow you, chosen by a person who knows that other person.

That has two compounding effects. The first is direct: more people see it. The second is quality: reach that arrives through recommendation converts better than reach from automatic delivery, because it comes with trust attached.

In practice, a high share rate usually appears before a reach spike, not after. Which is why it works as a leading indicator, while likes only confirm what already happened.

Content can be heavily saved and barely shared, which is the portrait of technical, useful material the person does not think anyone else needs. The inverse exists too: heavily shared and barely saved is the content that says something the person wishes they had said.

A profile chasing authority optimises for saves. A profile chasing growth optimises for shares. Wanting both means accepting they are different topics.

How to raise it without asking

  • Write for the recipient, not the reader. The right question is who this person would send it to.
  • Name a recognisable behaviour. The more precise the portrait, the more someone thinks of a specific person.
  • Give words to an opinion that is hard to phrase. Sharing becomes a way of saying it without writing it.
  • Make it self-contained. Content that depends on context from your profile makes no sense to whoever receives it.
  • Fit it on one screen. Long content gets saved; direct content gets sent.

Checklist

  • I divide by reach, not by follower count.
  • I compare against my own median, not a market benchmark.
  • I read it alongside non follower reach, which is where the effect shows.
  • I do not confuse it with save rate: they measure different things.
  • I treat a high rate as a signal that the topic deserves a series.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate share rate?

Divide the number of shares by the post's reach and multiply by 100. Use both numbers from the same time window, and always compare against your own median rather than a market figure.

What is a good share rate?

Small numbers are the norm, because sharing is the most expensive gesture in the app. What matters is the position relative to the median of your last thirty pieces of the same format, not the absolute value.

Why does share rate predict growth?

Because it is the only interaction that carries content to people who do not follow you, chosen by a person. It usually rises before a reach spike, which makes it a leading indicator, while likes only confirm what already happened.

What is the difference between share rate and save rate?

Saves signal usefulness to the person themselves and build authority. Shares signal social value and generate reach outside your base. Content can be high on one and low on the other, and both situations are informative.

Can I see who shared my post?

No. Insights only show the aggregate total. The one exception is when someone reposts to Stories and tags your profile, because the mention generates a notification.

Shares

A share is when someone sends your post to another person in Direct or reposts it to their own Stories. It is the most expensive interaction for the person acting, because it requires choosing a recipient and owning the recommendation, and that is why it pushes distribution outside your audience harder than anything else. No other interaction delivers content to a non follower through a human recommendation.

Illustration of save rate, showing the share that filed the content

Save rate

Save rate is the percentage of people who saw a piece of content and filed it away for later, calculated by dividing saves by reach. It isolates the usefulness dimension of engagement: while likes measure approval and comments measure willingness to talk, saves measure whether the piece was considered worth consulting again. It is the most direct metric for deciding which topic deserves to become a series.

Reach

Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a piece of content at least once. Unlike impressions, it does not count the same person twice, so it measures the size of the audience touched rather than the volume of exposure. On Instagram, reach is reported per post and per period, and it can be split between followers and non followers, which is the reading that shows whether a profile is discovering new people or simply circulating among those who already follow it.

Engagement rate by reach

Engagement rate by reach is the percentage of people who saw a piece of content and reacted to it, calculated by dividing total interactions by reach. Unlike the follower-based rate, it removes from the calculation everyone who never saw the post, which makes it the correct reading for judging content. In exchange, it can only be calculated by someone with access to insights, which makes it useless for comparing profiles from outside.
