Instagram feed: the two things the same word means
By Tiago Costa·Updated on August 5, 2026

Definition
Feed is the timeline you scroll and also the permanent grid of your profile.
- A feed post is permanent, unlike Stories.
- It accepts photo, carousel and video, with video also becoming a Reel.
- It has sorting tabs: the default, Following and Favourites.
- It is the profile showcase, and the first impression for arrivals.
The two things the word means
It is the source of almost every confusion about the term, so it is worth separating upfront.
The browsing feed is the home screen: the sequence of posts the app shows when you open it. It mixes accounts you follow with recommended content, ordered by the algorithm.
The profile feed is the thumbnail grid of your own account, in reverse chronological order, with pinned posts at the top. That is the "showcase" someone sees when arriving through your name.
When someone says "I posted to feed", they mean the second: they created a permanent piece that will appear in the grid and be distributed through the first.
Feed, Stories and Reels
| Format | Lasts | Serves |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | permanent | building the showcase and the archive |
| Stories | 24 hours | relationship with existing followers |
| Reels | permanent | discovery, reach beyond the base |
The border between feed and Reels became porous: a video published to feed also becomes a Reel and gets distributed across video surfaces. That led many people to conclude the feed died, which does not match what it solves.
What the feed does and nothing else does is stay. It is where the reference carousel someone saves lives, and it is what a person scrolls through when deciding whether to follow you.

The sorting tabs
The browsing feed has more than one ordering, and few people use the alternatives.
- Default. Ordered by the algorithm, mixing accounts you follow with recommendations.
- Following. Only accounts you follow, in chronological order, with no recommendations.
- Favourites. Only the accounts you marked as priority.
For anyone producing, the existence of the last two is strategic information: part of your audience may be consuming in a feed where recommendation does not enter, and there what counts is being followed and being recent, not being recommendable.
What is still worth posting to feed
- Reference content. Step by step guides and comparisons, which get saved and reopened.
- Pieces that hold up the showcase. The first nine tiles of the grid are the conversion page for arrivals.
- Dense content. Anything that needs reading at the reader's pace rather than video.
- Archive. A feed post keeps being found months later, through in-app search and the grid.
What usually performs better as a Reel than as a feed photo is pure discovery. They are not substitutes, they are different jobs inside the same account.

Checklist
- I know when I mean the browsing feed and when I mean the profile feed.
- I treat the first nine grid tiles as a conversion page.
- I do not abandon the feed because of Reels: the jobs are different.
- I use the feed for content that needs to stay and be found again.
- I remember part of the audience consumes through tabs without recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Instagram feed?
The word means two things: the timeline you scroll when you open the app, and the permanent grid of your own profile. Posting to feed means creating a piece that stays in the grid, unlike Stories.
What is Instagram feed vs Reels?
Both are permanent, but they serve different jobs. Feed builds the showcase and the archive, and holds dense reference content. Reels are the discovery format, with strong distribution to people who do not follow you.
Where is my Instagram feed?
The browsing feed is the first screen of the app, under the home icon. Your profile feed is the thumbnail grid that appears when you open your own account, below the bio and highlights.
How do I set my feed to chronological?
Beyond the default ordering, there are the Following tab, which shows only accounts you follow in chronological order with no recommendations, and Favourites, which shows only accounts you marked as priority.
What is the difference between feed and Stories?
A feed post is permanent and stays in the profile grid; a Story lasts 24 hours and disappears unless it becomes a highlight. The feed builds archive and showcase, the Story serves relationship with existing followers.
Related concepts

Stories
Stories are the vertical posts that disappear after 24 hours, shown at the top of the app rather than in the feed. It is the platform's relationship format: distribution goes almost entirely to existing followers, and ordering depends on closeness and viewing history. It is also the only Instagram format where the publisher sees a named list of who watched.

Reels
Reels is Instagram's short vertical video format, and the main distribution route to people who do not follow an account. Unlike a feed post, whose delivery depends heavily on the history between two accounts, a Reel is offered to whoever the system predicts is interested in the subject, which makes it the platform's most direct growth tool and also the most demanding on retention.

Carousel
A carousel is the Instagram post that holds up to 20 images or videos in a single publication, navigated by swiping sideways. It occupies the same feed space as a regular post but asks the viewer for one extra action, and that action is what makes it valuable: every frame advance adds dwell time, and the format gets a second delivery chance, because Instagram can re-show the post starting from a different frame to people who did not interact the first time.

Broadcast channel
A broadcast channel is a one-way conversation inside Instagram Direct where only the admin posts and every subscriber receives it. It is the platform's answer to broadcast lists in other messaging apps: direct delivery to the inbox, with a notification, without depending on feed ranking. In exchange, the audience is only whoever subscribed, and it does not talk back beyond polls and reactions.
